The phrase "nobody is illegal on stolen land" links immigration policies to the history of settler colonialism, arguing that the modern state's authority to enforce borders is illegitimate because it was founded on the violent dispossession of Indigenous peoples.  This perspective suggests that the very concept of an "illegal" person is invalid when applied to land acquired through unjust means.

The concept of "no one is illegal":
The first part of the slogan, "no one is illegal," challenges the dehumanizing nature of the term "illegal immigrant".  It argues that no human being's existence can be unlawful.  The phrase originated as an international human rights campaign asserting that people, as opposed to actions, cannot be illegal.

The context of settler colonialism:
The phrase's second part adds the crucial context of land theft from Indigenous peoples.  From this viewpoint, immigration laws in settler-colonial states like the U.S.A. are seen as tools to protect stolen land and reinforce a racist system that benefits certain "citizens" over others.  It highlights the hypocrisy of governments enforcing border laws while having historically violated treaties and committed violence against Indigenous populations to acquire their territory.  Many migrants from Central and South America also have Indigenous heritage, and their migration is often the result of marginalization and displacement caused by colonial legacies.

The Trump administration routinely violates the precepts of both of these concepts, through dehumanization of "Others" in a white supremacist way, as well as the wholesale rejection of refugees, victims of endemic national violence, and profiling of ANY non-white, english speaking, colonialist descended people for extrajudicial detention and deportation.  This behavior is abhorrent by any metric, and mirrors the philosophies that led to the virtual extermination of Native American peoples and cultures, which not coincidentally the administration seeks to erase all mention of from our national history and consciousness.

We at ProtestSource.com do not believe that people can be labeled as illegal, only their actions.  we ascribe to the words on the statue of Liberty, "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free", and believe our nation is enhanced by multiculturalism, immigration, and acceptance of refugees from all countries and circumstances.  We also believe ALL Americans need reminders of the travesties and tragedies committed in our past in the name of colonialist expansion, or we are doomed to repeat them as we see happening today.
